claymore Posted 3 April , 2009 Share Posted 3 April , 2009 Tracing my grandfather's steps with the 9th Canadian Artillery Brigade. Would anyone have a trench map from August 1918 - 9th Bde HQ was "on the AMIENS-ROYE Road, 1,000 yards east of GENTELLES WOOD". Thanks.
JimSmithson Posted 3 April , 2009 Share Posted 3 April , 2009 Bois de Gentelles is in 62dSW and at the moment the IWM does not hold any copies of that area, if it was mapped at all. The fighting around Amiens in 1918 was very fluid and thus time for trench mapping was not available. Here is a map of the situation on 8th August 1918 from the Linesman collection of maps. Gentelles Wood is in the centre. I'll also add the same area on a modern 25000, again thanks to Linesman. Hope they help a little Jim

claymore Posted 6 April , 2009 Author Share Posted 6 April , 2009 Thanks to both. I'm assuming that the AMIENS-ROYE Road is the road running west to east through Cachy, Gentelles and Boves? My grandfather's diary makes for pretty routine reading, until I looked at the dates and locations, and realized that he was right in the middle of things. Thanks again.
