charlie962 Posted 6 January , 2019 Share Posted 6 January , 2019 (edited) Rechecking newspapers I come up with a 1915 photo reporting death of William Orchiston, Royal Scots from Dundee but he didn't come up on CWGC. Was the report incorrect ? Here's the photo: thanks to FindmyPast Newspaper Archive Put a moustache on him and he might resemble portrait ? In the newspaper article the Grandson states that "His" William lost his left leg when he got home. The Hamilton Records office snippitt suggests that the William 15877 lost his Right Leg. I am now starting to think that the portrait is of The BlackWatch man is also from Lochee. Wiliiam Orchiston, 2584 Black Watch and 590835 Labour Corps. I think they are a match. https://www.eveningtelegraph.co.uk/fp/blether-ace-striker-ronnie-seeks-info-on-wwi-hero-grandad-and-seafield-side/ Edited 6 January , 2019 by Martin Feledziak
Martin Feledziak Posted 6 January , 2019 Share Posted 6 January , 2019 (edited) Now having seen the photograph in post 28. I am now going to conclude that the below image is Not the Grandfather of Ron MITCHELL but more likly :- William Orchiston, 2584 Black Watch and 590835 Labour Corps. Dundee Men 26/10/15 2584 Private W. Orchiston—admitted Rouen; contusion right shoulder. But this same 2584 (of 1/6th Bn) has a Hospital Admission 29/7/15 for Malaria, aged 22, so also born c 1893. Since 2014 I have thought that the pastel drawing was 15877 Orchiston. BUT now I feel it is more likely to be 2584 Orchiston.
Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 6 January , 2019 Share Posted 6 January , 2019 (edited) Here is a list of every William Orchiston adult death in Scotland. The 4 in blue are candidates. We assume then that William Stewart Orchiston (b1895) is the man who lost his leg. One of the other 3 should be the man in the portrait then.
