Unusual Gazette Entry for RFC

PhilB

Recommended Posts

All other gazette entries have only initials but this has Siddartha. Is it a Christian (ie Buddhist) name or some form of title?

It might have been or alternitively an old India hand might have liked the sound of it. There was a huge traffic in words and people between India and the UK, especially in 1897. That was Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee year and there were many 'Soldiers of the Queen' brought over for parade and they were also featured on cigarette cards. Queen Victoria had Indian servants; multi cultralism isn't new! So the family did not have to have visited the Sub Continent.

His father was not at home in 1901, mabe he was on overseas service?

The word Siddhartha is made up of two words in the Sanskrit language, siddha (achieved) + artha (meaning or wealth). The two words together mean "one who has found meaning (of existence)" or "he who has attained his goals".[1] The Buddha's name, before his renunciation, was Prince Siddhartha Gautama, later the Buddha.

So it's not simply the combination of two names, Sid and Arthur??

Siddhartha or Siddartha is the given name of the Buddha (Gautama Buddha).

If posts are like busses - then ok this is a tad late!

I came across this poor guy's gravestone in Harrow, Middx today as I walked through the cemetery to the park, with the dog.

I have walked past it thousands of times. But today I noticed the name 'siddartha' at the bottom of his grandmother's grave.

I was intrigued, as this was the Buddha's name - and the book by Herman Hesse

So, I sat down and pulled away the grass, and scraped away, and found the following:

SIDDARTHA JOHN OLIVER

2ND LIEUT RFC

ONLY CHILD OF JM OLIVER

DIED IN AREIL BATTLE IN FLANDERS

10 AUGUST 1917

GRANDMOTHER WAS MARY SARAH DUDBRIDGE SMALLBONE

17 JANUARY 1829 TO 7 OCTOBER 1916

He's on the Arras memorial, but I noticed that his entry in the University of London OTC Roll of Honour shows him to be buried at Audenaarde (see the foot of the page below).

I wonder if there is or was a grave of an unidentified RFC man in that area....?

Oh gosh... I never expected to hear anything more. I just joined to see if he was 'known' and posted for posterity.

I guess its a memorial as it says he died in Flanders.

I have some pics of his grave - I will try and add them

If anyone wants more from Pinner Road, Harrow Cemetery (the one at the bottom of the hill) let me know

Thanks!!

That's a family memorial. He's commemorated on the Arras Flying Services memorial, so somewhere along the line the reference to his known grave at Audenaarde (now Oudenaarde) was lost.

I may be wrong on this, but I don't think there was heavy fighting at Oudenaarde in '17-'18, so maybe it's just his named grave marker that was lost....?

Would have to say he looks somewhat Anglo-Indian

Probably explains the name?
