Mike Jones Posted 28 March , 2009 Share Posted 28 March , 2009 Hi All Can anybody tell me if they have a copy of the War Diary from 01/08/1916 to 12/08/1916 for the 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment. I am trying to find out how Pte 8324 Charles John LLoyd C-Company 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment was Killed in Action. he was the brother of my last post Cecil LLoyd who I now can research, thanks to a couple of kind members who helped me out. Charles is buried in POTIJZE BURIAL GROUND CEMETERY (YPRES) thanks for looking Mike.
Marc Thompson Posted 28 March , 2009 Share Posted 28 March , 2009 On the night of 8th / 9th August 1916 the Germans launched a gas attack on the 29th Division front at Potijze; there were heavy losses, especially in the 2nd Hampshires (4 officers and 125 men died out of nearly 240 casualties). You can trace the graves from Potijze back to Poperinghe and beyond. Of the 800+ gas casualties across the front, 2 out of every 5 died. There is a good account of the gas attack on 2/Hants in the book "I Survived Didn't I?" which records the Great War Reminiscences of Private 'Ginger' Byrne. Below is the headstone for 8324 Pte Charles John Lloyd. Marc

Marc Thompson Posted 12 April , 2009 Share Posted 12 April , 2009 do you have anything relating to the 2nd hampshire's in ireland circa 1915-192+ ny grand father was in the band. Bandsman Charles Wroot Kevin, The information that I have provided to you in the other thread is as much as I can locate. I have consulted the 2/Hants WD for this period and while it provides details of the bomb attack on the band your grand father is not mentioned. Given that he served post 1921 your best bet will be to obtain his service record. The previous thread HERE provides the link that you are after.
