I can't help you with your query but do keep an eye on this site in the future because the 24th's War Diary is in the process of being transcribed.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for that.. I do have a copy of the diary June 17th-Dec 31st 1917 by R.H.Pipon Lt Col cmdr 24th Bn.

My uncle did'nt join the 24th until 25th June 1917 after serving with the 25th frontiersmen in Africa.

Thanks again for thinking of me.

I've just joined the forum as my father was in the 24th RF from 1914-1919. I have some of his letters and he wrote on the 20th Dec 1917 and also on the 22nd December. From these letters it appeared that they still in the trenches although he mentions a game of football which was curtailed when the land owner confiscated the ball and also the Christmas lunch so they may have been in a safe area away from the front line. Detail in the "History of the 2nd Division" is a bit sketchy but it appears that they were involved in action around the Canal du Nord with the 5th brigade establishing contact with the enemy on the 19th December. Hope this helps. Did you have any luck getting a copy of the War Diary?

Regards Les Burr
