Remembered Today:

Caudry evacuated due to unexploded bomb

On Wednesday this week, the town of Caudry was evacuated for a while when an unexploded WW2 American bomb was discovered. 3000 people had to leave their homes. The bomb was removed and blown up in a field near Inchy. I happened to be visiting that morning, going to the British and German WW1 cemeteries - and wondered what all the police were doing!

Caudry is on the Cambrai - Le Cateau road, on the western edge of what was the 1914 battlefield of Le Cateau.

Fortunately the Pentagon has an office that still maintains the records of the fuze type and timing for bombs dropped in WWII. Many of them are almost instantaneous impact fuzes making the job of removal that much more dangerous.
