John_Hartley Posted 11 February , 2003 Share Posted 11 February , 2003 One of my current interests is a 2nd Lt Willliam Beecroft who was commissioned into the 6th Bn, Gloucestershires in January 1918. He was killed on 22 July 1918 and is buried in Bertrancourt Cemetery. The local newspaper suggests that he was serving with the Lancs Fusiliers at the time. I just wondered if there's a Fusilers specialist out there in Forum-land who might confirm if there might have been any particular reason for him to have moved (decimation of own Bn?) and, if so, which Fusiler Bn might have been in the Bertrancourt area at this time. Michael Posted 12 February , 2003 Share Posted 12 February , 2003 There is a service record for 2 Lt W H Beecroft at the PRO ref WO 374/5330. If it is your man, it might give details of movements and attachments. I can't believe I'm the only forum member awake at this un-godly hour ! Clive Harris Posted 13 February , 2003 Share Posted 13 February , 2003 The 6th Gloucs as part of the 48th South Midland Division were in Italy when Lt Beecroft was killed, if he was returning to duty following an earlier wound he may have been posted to a unit in France instead, the 7th Lancashire Fusiliers saw action around the time of his death in the Somme area and in fact lost half a dozen men on that day, the were part of the 42nd East Lancs Division at the time - I would think the newspaper is right and he was attached to the 7th Lancashire Fusliers, good luck
John_Hartley Posted 14 February , 2003 Author Share Posted 14 February , 2003 Michael/Clive - thanks for the info. PRO is a bit far for this enquiry. I'll start with Clive's suggestion as I'm planning to do some research at the Lancs Fusiliers museum over the next couple of months. Hopefully, he'll get a mention.
