i purchased what i beleive to be a WWI arieal dummy bomb. (pics are here: http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=16565560 at the bottom of the page) the item itself says "AN-MK23Mod1" i don't know if the MK23 means made in 1923 (after the war of course) or not.....i am just wondering if anyone has seen any of these and has any history for me, please let me know here or at my e mail jmatthewdinger@hotmail.com thanks a bunch

Matt

A couple of points....

Not made of copper (it would deform and be very expensive). It is made of cast iron - the coppery tint is actually rust !

As to its origin, it is US in origin (as indicated by the AN - Army Navy - designation), though the use of Mk would indicate USN origin rather than US Army or US Air Force origin but they used common stores during the days of WW2 and later.

At a guess I would say WW2 or later manufacture up to around 1960 or so simulating bombs from slower aircraft (propellor driven or early jet).....

And little used because these bombs do suffer damage after several uses if they are recovered....
