Remembered Today:

Initials and full names

The details inscribed on the grave stones in CWGC cemeteries are always interesting, not least because of the apparent variation in content. In particular, on a visit to the Cambrai area this week, I was made curious as to why some men have only an initial or initials with their surname, and others their name in full. I recalled Terry Denham's advice regarding the receipt by the then IWGC of the Final Verification Form, and wondered if that was anything to do with it. I tried to spot a trend. At first it appeared as though the full names only appeared if their was an added inscription, but later we found cases where this was not so. Rank makes no difference, either. Can anyone tell me more?

You got it!

CWGC do not regard the full name as being of vital importance (I disagree but still...) and therefore only include it if the names were supplied by the n-o-k on the Final Verification Form - otherwise initials suffice.

We discussed this very subject in passing at today's London Pals' Meeting. CWGC do not research the records and so do not add full names as a matter of course but if the names are provided with solid evidence, they will add them.

Of course, those on CWGC memorials only have initials in all cases.
