Guest Pete Wood Posted 27 March , 2004 Share Posted 27 March , 2004 I find the Australian records the best of all. There is so much to find - especially with a casualty. As well as the roll of honour which says when a soldier left Australia (and when he/she returned - or date of death), you can check to see if the soldier was recommended for an award. In the case of our man, we can tell from his attestation papers that he was a driver You can also see from the 15 pages of records from the Australian Red Cross Society that he was wounded in the stomach. He died in 3 CCS and had a brother and cousin serving in the war. There is also a description of him, and details of his previous unit and even a mention of some leave in London. Great stuff. Andrew P Posted 27 March , 2004 Share Posted 27 March , 2004 Seems like King was hit when the 15th Brigade and the 58th Battalion were advancing on the Outpost Villages in front of the Hindenburg Line. I agree with RT, there is usually quite a bit of info that you can find about someone who died in the Australian forces. Sometimes the Next of Kin sheet has some very good information about the persons family or what they did prior to the war. Regards Andrew
