alex falbo Posted 22 February , 2009 Share Posted 22 February , 2009 Can someone give me the opposing German units facing the 1st Middlesex on the St. Georges Day attack near Cherisy? Any trench maps would be appreciated too.
JimSmithson Posted 22 February , 2009 Share Posted 22 February , 2009 It's a bit late for me now Alex (hour ahead and all that) but if nobody comes up with anything before tomorrow I'll try to help. As a starter I think it was the 176th Rgt of 35th Division opposite 33rd Div but I will check for tomorrow if nobody comes up and corrects me before then. JimSmithson Posted 23 February , 2009 Share Posted 23 February , 2009 Hi Alex I am pretty sure it was the 176th opposite the 1/Middlesex. I wanted to find one or two more sources but I think they are in France out of reach at the moment. I recall and have notes on the OH describing the 176th counter attacking the 1/Middlesex and cutting many of them off. Trench maps for this period are a bit of a problem because the next ones produced after the 9th April offensive (and even they were pre-German retreat) were July. I need to trawl some of my unit diaries for sketch maps to show positions but I think they are all north of what you want. I'll get back later if I can find anything useful. Jack Sheldon Posted 24 February , 2009 Share Posted 24 February , 2009 This is the first of three potentially relevant maps. This is from the history of IR 61 Jack This is the second, showing the pre-attack deployment of IR
Jack Sheldon Posted 24 February , 2009 Share Posted 24 February , 2009 ... and this is the third, also from IR 176. I am afraid I do not know anything about this particular engagement, but there are descriptions in the histories, should you need more to supplement what Jim locates. My only reason for posting these images is to enable you to define more precisely the formation which directly opposed the Middlesex. The story can then be developed further as required. alex falbo Posted 24 February , 2009 Author Share Posted 24 February , 2009 Quick question for either of you since you've been most helpful! Do the diaries of 176th or 61st talk about the isolation of two companies of the Middlesex during the assault on the 23rd and do they state any times about withdrawing? Thanks.
