Tomkinson Posted 22 February , 2009 Share Posted 22 February , 2009 The attached picture shows the Bristish Camp at Ali Gharabi - Mesopotamia. My great Grandfather served as a Gunner in the RFA in the campaign and was station in Basra for a time. Ali Gharabi is considerably north of Basra and presumably the British forces were on their way to Baghdad in pursuit of the Turks in 1917-18? Not overly sure of the campaign details but I am sure some expert on here can tell me the date the photo was taken and the exact disposition of forces at the time! My great Grandfather comments on the back of the card: The river on the picture is the Tigis we keep alongside the river for water for the men and horses all camps are by the river He then adds a postscript: notice vast stretch of nothing on it just the same all over for hundreds of miles that is the reason we cannot leave the river. centurion Posted 22 February , 2009 Share Posted 22 February , 2009 I think this is the location http://www.traveljournals.net/explore/iraq...ali_gharbi.html note the card spells it Gharbi not Ghrabi. I believe there was a refugee camp there in 2003/

Tomkinson Posted 22 February , 2009 Author Share Posted 22 February , 2009 Terry The map has its uses but the dates on 1915 and 1916 certainly pre-date my great-Grandfather arrival in Mesopotamia. Apologies for the earlier mis-spelling - it should be Ali Gharbi. This is the place: http://www.traveljournals.net/explore/iraq...ali_gharbi.html Cheers Mike Tomkinson Bradford
