Lance Corporal 12906 James Henry Cowell of the 252nd Tunnelling Coy., Royal Engineers who died on Friday, 16th February 1917. Age 47. Son of William and Elizabeth Cowell, of Allerton Bywater; husband of Martha Cowell, of Garden Cottage, Allerton Bywater, near Castleford, Yorks.

Buried in the AUCHONVILLERS MILITARY CEMETERY

He was originally in the Royal West Kent Regiment and I guess he transferred over when the Tunnelling Companies were set up.

This is my Great Grandfather.

Details of rank or profession on birth cert of his daughter born Dec 1914 are Private Royal West Kent, Coal miner

He had been in Germany just over a year when he was killed , he did not enlist until after his son was taken as a POW at St Elois (details of POW thanks to CICR )
