I have a Great War medal pair to the M 18726 H.J. House, Royal Navy. The trade letters are "AR. CR.". Does anyone know what the trade is? Also what is the significance of the "M" before his number.

Thanks for your help.

I've found a list of Ranks used on medals on the PRO web site, which confirms that AR. CR. is "Armourers Crew". Still need help on the "M" prefix.

I've been looking around there (been told before it's there somewhere  ), but haven't been able to find it.

Could you please let me know the URL?

Cheers,

Les.

According to Howard Williamson's book "The Collector and researchers guide to the Great War" part one (page 138), the prefix 'M' means:

RN unit - artisan and miscellaneous ratings, includes Engine Room and Electrical Artificers, Armourers, Wiremen, Carpenters, Sick Berth Ratings, Attendants, Writers, Stewards etc etc.

In other words the 'M' is a trade prefix.
