Guest Bob Juno Posted 24 March , 2004 Share Posted 24 March , 2004 I have a Great War medal pair to the M 18726 H.J. House, Royal Navy. The trade letters are "AR. CR.". Does anyone know what the trade is? Also what is the significance of the "M" before his number. Thanks for your help.
Guest Bob Juno Posted 24 March , 2004 Share Posted 24 March , 2004 I've found a list of Ranks used on medals on the PRO web site, which confirms that AR. CR. is "Armourers Crew". Still need help on the "M" prefix.
eviltaxman Posted 24 March , 2004 Share Posted 24 March , 2004 I've found a list of Ranks used on medals on the PRO web site I've been looking around there (been told before it's there somewhere ), but haven't been able to find it. Could you please let me know the URL? Cheers, Les.
Michael Posted 24 March , 2004 Share Posted 24 March , 2004 Numbers prefixed by the letter M were issued to artisans, sick berth staff and ship's police (regulators). Michael
Guest Pete Wood Posted 24 March , 2004 Share Posted 24 March , 2004 According to Howard Williamson's book "The Collector and researchers guide to the Great War" part one (page 138), the prefix 'M' means: RN unit - artisan and miscellaneous ratings, includes Engine Room and Electrical Artificers, Armourers, Wiremen, Carpenters, Sick Berth Ratings, Attendants, Writers, Stewards etc etc. In other words the 'M' is a trade prefix.
