squirrel Posted 1 February , 2009 Share Posted 1 February , 2009 Phil, just had a look at The Somme The Day by Day account by Chris McCarthy for 7th October 1916 the following: XV Corps 12th Division Just before zero hour the Germans put down a machine gun barrage on the British front line trench held by the Division, hampering the attack. Although 8th and 9th Royal Fusiliers (36 Brigade) and the 6th Buffs (37 Brigade) entered their objectives, Rainbow and Bayonet trenches, they were forced out.
