All

Am i correct in thinking the Newfoundland regiment were also at Gueudecourt and would they have been fighting alongside the 9th Battalion?

Regards

Phil

Phil,

The Newfoundland Regiment had just arrived from the Salient and went into the line N. of Gueudecourt at 1630 on the 10th, relief complete by 2130.

Phil,

just had a look at The Somme The Day by Day account by Chris McCarthy for 7th October 1916 the following:

XV Corps 12th Division

Just before zero hour the Germans put down a machine gun barrage on the British front line trench held by the Division, hampering the attack. Although 8th and 9th Royal Fusiliers (36 Brigade) and the 6th Buffs (37 Brigade) entered their objectives, Rainbow and Bayonet trenches, they were forced out.

For more detail I would suggest you have a look at the OH and see if anybody has, or can get hold of, a copy of the battalion war diary.

There's quite a bit in the 9th Royal Fusiliers diary for 7/10 but if you need a copy pm me with your e-mail address and I will send it to you Phil.
