Bow123 Posted 30 January , 2009 Share Posted 30 January , 2009 Hello, does anyone know who manned the Ordnance depots that existed in this country during WWI.Would it have been members of the Royal Army Ordnance corps? Thanks Roger
Terry_Reeves Posted 30 January , 2009 Share Posted 30 January , 2009 Roger They were manned by a mixture of military and civilian personnel. If you can get hold of a copy of A History of the Army Ordnance Services - The Great War, there is a chapter devoted to this subject. TR
Bow123 Posted 31 January , 2009 Author Share Posted 31 January , 2009 Hello Thanks for the reply. Was the purpose of the Ordnance depots for the storage of completed ammunition manufactured elsewhere or were weapons manufactured on site aswell? Thanks Roger
Raldal Posted 31 January , 2009 Share Posted 31 January , 2009 The Depots were used for storage of other stores, not only ammunition. The AOC was responsible for the supply of most items except for Food, Forage,Petrol Oil and Lubricants. Gun were not manufatured by them, they came from the relevant Arsenal. The AOC Artificer Section were, however responsible for "major servicing" of the Guns.
