Remembered Today:

Mesopotamia Troop Transport

Recommended Posts

Attached is a replication of a post card in my possession showing the troop transport SS Minnetonka which was used to transfer troops from/to the Mesopotamia Campaign region.

My great Grandfather travelled on her probably in late 1917, early 1918.

Cheers

Mike, a couple of diary entries from my Great Grand Pa [see signature] First one from France to Salonika. Second from Salonika to Egypt.

December 4 1916:

Left rest camp and went by motor lorry to docks. Went aboard the ‘Minnetonka’ at 4:00pm.

June 9 1917:

Packed up and went back to docks again. Went on board ‘Minnetonka’ and slept on rafts from 2:00am.

Cheers Andy.

Thanks Andy.

That seemsd to tie up as in my great Grandfather's collection of post cards are ones from France, one from Egypt and a number which appear to be Indian?

Obviously the majority are from Basra and further north as the advanced looking for the retreating Turks. I think at some stage he ends up in Baghdad.

I have not pieced it all together yet but he served in the RFA and I have plenty of photos which I am working through.

Cheers
