Eddie Morton Posted 22 March , 2004 Share Posted 22 March , 2004 My mate Charlie and I spent a week around Ypers in early March, good visit, we were researching the West Riding Reg. However moving on, can anyone give an answer to this, why is there a diference in the German headstones in the Belgium cemeteries and those in the Somme cemeteries. Down on the Somme and possibly the rest of France the German headstones in British cemetries are the same size as the CWGC headstone with the addition of a pointed top. In Belguim they are a similar height but are about 5 inches thick with a flat top. WHY. Regards, Eddie
Terry Denham Posted 22 March , 2004 Share Posted 22 March , 2004 There are several different types of German headstone. They do not have one standard pattern. Besides those you describe, you will find crosses and blocks as opposed to traditional shape headstones. However, those in CWGC cemeteries are designed to blend with the Commonwealth ones. The design of Foreign National headstones is the decision of the national authorities and not all of them have a standardised policy. You will see several variations of other national headstones also.
