Remembered Today:

Flanders and Somme trip

sunflower

Recommended Posts

Am travelling very soon to Flanders (Ypres) and the Somme. I know I will definitely be going to Tyne Cot, Dernancourt (nr Albert), Serre No 2, and the German cemetery at Fricourt.

If anyone wishes a request for a photo, just let me know and I will do my best.

This is a photo of the French cemetery at Serre.

Hi Sunflower

Should you pass Dernancourt Communal Extension and have time on your hands, would you snap these two headstones:

Gunner Harry James, Royal Garrison Artillery, died 11th September 1918, plot VIII/D/3

and

Pte Frank Rivers, Gloucestershire Regiment, died 1st January 1917, plot IV/F/11

Many thanks

Regards

Jimmy

My pleasure Jimmy. Can definitely say that I can meet with your request. I am going to Dernancourt to photograph the grave of Lt Stuart Boyd. (A Sherwood Forester who died of wounds 7 Oct 1916. He was serving at the time with the Loyal North Lancashires)

Will get back to you when I return home

I have a photo for Private William Hendry, 202386, 4th Bn., Gordon Highlanders who died on Thursday 20 Sept 1917, age 19.

Tyne Cot

Now I cant find the posting that made the initial request. I will post the photo anyway and hope that the person requesting it sees it okay.

Hi Old Chap

Yes I did have a great trip. Went to Ypres for the first time and saw the Yorkshire Trench which is right smack in the middle of a built up area. Of course, that is how they found it with the area being developed.

There are some finds on display from it at the 'In Flanders Field' Museum at the Cloth Hall in Ypres and a TV capturing all the moments extracting the items from the dugouts. I was a wee bit disappointed that the dugouts were flooded, I had it in my head that you would be able to go down. But still the 'Diggers' do excellent work and I think it is really good that part of a trench system has been preserved.

I think I prefer the Somme where it is much like it was during the Great War - the woods, roads, lanes, features....

And the weather was great so all in all an excellent trip.
