Chalkhill Blue Posted 13 January , 2009 Share Posted 13 January , 2009 My grandfather joined the RHA as a driver, circa 1904. I have a copy of a photo of him (on a postcard, postmarked in 1907) in which his regimental number on his haversack can be made out - the same number as inscribed on his 1914-18 trio. I had always assumed he was a regular when he embarked for France in August 1914 but his service record has not survived to confirm this. I think I have found him today on the 1911 Census - back in civvy street! If it is him, it would be the solution to a long-standing family mystery. Has anybody a view on whether it is at all possible that he left the RHA before 1911 and became a reservist, whilst retaining his original regimental number? Ski Posted 13 January , 2009 Share Posted 13 January , 2009 Bryan As a reservist yes he would have reatained his Regtl number. I think you can safely say he was in his Reserve period of his engagement at the start of the War and was thus called up. Regards, Lee

per ardua per mare per terram Posted 14 January , 2009 Share Posted 14 January , 2009 Have you found his MIC? His date of entry could also be a clue. You say 1914 trio, that would suggest too that he was a reservist.
