hillgorilla Posted 11 December , 2008 Share Posted 11 December , 2008 Hi, For a number of years now I have been researching about the war dead of Strathaven in Lanarkshire, Scotland. I have traced the majority of the casualites burial places - but have found some that I have not been able to find. The men are - Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders - James Horan Royal Fusiliers - William B Hamilton and William A McKay. Black Watch - Richard Matthews. Seaforth Highlanders - Donald Davidson. South African - Robert Fleming and James McLaughlin. CEF - Henry Robertson. RFA - Claude Torrance. Does anyone have any pointers?
Hywyn Posted 11 December , 2008 Share Posted 11 December , 2008 Using Geoffs Search Engine and putting Strathaven in 'including' is this McLaughlin? http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...casualty=898635 There are 34 Henry Robertson in the Canadian attestation papers http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databas...42-100.01-e.php Possibly worth a look to see if any are shown born in that area. John_Hartley Posted 11 December , 2008 Share Posted 11 December , 2008 The South African Defence Forces have a good archive set-up and hold all their relevent service papers. They are very helpful but have nothing digitised and, in consequence, replies can take many weeks.

Hywyn Thank for the pointer re James McLaughlin, that is him. I have spent years trying to find out, and even tried the CWGC in the days before the online database, when you had to pay a pound per search. Have not encountered Geoffs search engine before. Thanks for the pointer.
Hywyn Posted 11 December , 2008 Share Posted 11 December , 2008 If you thought sliced bread was good then... The search engine was devised by Geoff501 of this Forum. One of it's best features for most memorial/area researchers is the ability to search the field containg the addresses etc. Hywyn

Thank you again for the pointer.
