Remembered Today:

Crossed Flags

The double brassard means Dispatch Rider.

Guy

That's odd he's wearing spurs! Weren't despatch riders usually Corporals? I seem to recall that early in the war they were all given this rank on appointment as Don R's. I have to admit this isn't an area I know too much about, and I could be talking out of my backside!

I have a kit issue card to a Cpl Bartlett, an American, who served as an RE despatch rider I'll post it for Joe Sweeney tomorrow, all sorts of goodies listed.

Regards

Tocemma

Just opened up this morning: what a stunning series of photographs! Superb contributions from all. This Forum blows me away sometimes.

Many many thanks, this thread is to drool over.

Just one question to KIA KAHA: I don't doubt your word about the genuineness of the three worsteds for Great War, but, for the record, how do you know for sure please?

And two observations:

Tocemma's cpl is [or should be] an 'assistant instructor in signalling' .... a signaller who had not passed as an instructor should continue to wear badge lower left. Should!

And the Middx Cpl is a bit naughty, wearing a GC badge .... should have taken it off on promotion.

Don't you just love it: if it can go wrong, it will go wrong.

I was interested to see the heliograph in the group photograph above. And then a photo turns up on e-bay showing a heliograph in use. (Item No 190270605984.)

I've attached one of my odder Jackets I picked up up 15 to 20years ago.

The Crossed flags are worsted and very ornate--extra padding etc. The Badge is to a I believe a Chief Petty(or just Petty ) Officer Telegraphist. This is the only Khaki version I've ever seen. If anyone has better info on what that badge is please let me know.

TM any more info to add to the collective I'm more than grateful for.

Guy,

Whats your source on Double brassard meaning Despatch Rider?

There are variuos instuctions for wear of the Signal Services Brassard and all I have state worn on both arms regardless of whether a despatch rider or not.

No rank badges? Most would have Navy rank on one sleeve, and army on the other, surely?

Supposed to yes.

In practice actually no.

Look at postcard of Petty Officer in Chambers book.

Why on the right sleeve as opposed to the left?

Hi

Grumpy I tried replying to your message your inbox is full.

The worsted badges came with two different groups of WW1 Signalers items I have in my collection.

John The Photo you are referring to is of a M111 Electric Daylight Signal lamp a nice early one with the adaptor attachment, Nice pic...

Joe can you post a close up pic of the flags and badge would like to see them?

Joe,

leading Seaman rate badge. I assume this is RND. I've had it for years.

Thought it might be of interest.

Red as worn on RN working dress. I assume this was transferred to SD.

And this one. Gucci red velvet and worsted warrant crown on a khaki backing. Acquired with the last badge. Crown 50mm high, 55mm wide

Previous badge 77mm high, 50mm wide.

Sorry Joe, why what? Nicht verstehen, as they say in France [or is it Spain?]

I know very little on how RND ranks were to be worn. I see a lot of photos of navy rank on the left sleeve, but all lower ranks.

TM thanks for sharing I think those are RND insignia.

Joe,

No 'Source' as such, but you just have to observe WW1 photos. All the stock signallers wore one brassard on the Right arm.

Signallers

However, every photo I have seen of guys wearing two are Dispatch Riders.

I can't put my hand on one instantly, but may find one later on.
