SDevon Posted 16 November , 2008 Share Posted 16 November , 2008 Hi there, A first post for me on this forum but I hope someone can help me to identify the uniform and/or regiment of my gt grandfather (pic attached). I'm looking into his history and understand he served in ww1. His name was George Bryant (no middle name/initial)and I know that was in the Marlow, Bucks area at the start of the war and married locally in late 1915. Any help with the cap badge in particular much appreciated so I can try and track down the rest. I'm waiting for copy of his marriage cert but its quite possible this won't tell me anything about his regiment etc so I'm hoping the picture will help. Thanks, SDevon
pbrydon Posted 16 November , 2008 Share Posted 16 November , 2008 Lightening the picture makes it a little easier to see the cap badge, but still not very distinctive. I had thought Wiltshire Regt but perhaps not. P.B.

I'll dig a bit to see if any records tie-up.

max7474 Posted 16 November , 2008 Share Posted 16 November , 2008 Bearing in mind the bandolier and breeches he is more likley tobe arty than Wiltshies. the Wilts would have had a few mounted soldiers but relatively few per bn.
Black Watch Posted 16 November , 2008 Share Posted 16 November , 2008 Artillery for me too. There are 9 George Bryants on ancestry in R.A. None in Wiltshire. Neil
pbrydon Posted 16 November , 2008 Share Posted 16 November , 2008 If there is a field gun as part of that cap badge then I think a trip to the opticians is called for for me on Monday morning. P.B.

SDevon Posted 17 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 17 November , 2008 Big thanks for all your suggestions (and trips to the opticians!). I'd agree that a field gun looks unlikely - even if the scroll does have the right sort of shape. I've googled those other suggestions and perhaps the eagle shape is possible which makes Dragoons a further lead to follow. I'll keep digging on Ancestry for matches - shame its such a common name for those times! Keep the suggestions rolling if you can and post something up if I find out more.
