Remembered Today:

Military Cemetery

Some days ago I received some photos of three graves present on a ww1 military cemetery.

Is there a link between the regiments, they served, and the inscription on the headstone of their graves ?

Is the regiment, they served, always present on the headstone of their graves ?

Gilbert

If your pictures are of CWGC headstones to Commonwealth men, then the last regiment in which the casualty served is always inscribed on the stone.

And before anyone says it... except for some Labour Corps men who have their previous regiment inscribed.

Thanks for the information. The photos are taken in 'The New Military Cemetery' at Reningelst and show CWGC headstones.

These photos show the graves of Private W. Smith, Private F. Loader and Private R. Barker.

According to CWGC,

Robert Barker - 1/6 London Regiment,

Frederick Loader - 1/22 London Regiment.

There are 3 W. Smiths in that cemetery: a Canadian, an Aussie and William Smith, 3/5 Lancashire Fusiliers.

It is, indeed, the grave of William Smith who belonged to the Lancashire Fusiliers (according to the photo).

Reexamination of the two other photos says that

- Private F. Loader belonged to the 22 nd bn London Regiment

- Private R. Barker belonged to the City of London Rifles

Interested persons can get these digital photos. (Please leave in that case your email address)

To Chris,

Does this match your data.
