Julie Kelly Posted 8 November , 2008 Share Posted 8 November , 2008 I wonder if someone can help me please. I have details of my Grandfather's service but would like to know where his units were based in the war or any other details anyone can help with. Some of the units he was in are: 5a Reserve Bde - posted driver 9/6/1916 25th Reserve Bde - 1/7/1916 4a Reserve Bde - 13/9/1916 No 2 Section Reserve DAC - became 11th Bde Amm Col. 27/9/1916 Overseas to France 27/9/1916 20th Reserve Battery RFA DAC 13/10/1916 D/331st Bde 8/3/1919 1/1 Essex Heavy Artillery - 16/4/1919 79th Bde RGA 17/4/1919 Essex Heavy Artillery to Rhine Army Con Camp for Demob 10/9/1919 As with many others it appears he was moved around quite a bit but if anyone can talk me through where some of these were posted I would be most grateful. sotonmate Posted 8 November , 2008 Share Posted 8 November , 2008 JK One thing that stands out for me are the initials DAC,which means that he was attached to Divisional Ammunition Columns, probably driving (likely to be horses) ammo carts from dumps to the gunsites. I will take a look further but there are good Artillery specialists here, and hopefully one will pick up on your questions. There is a page from the Long Long Trail at top left of this page which gives some info on the Artillery: http://www.1914-1918.net/whatartbrig.htm Sotonmate
sotonmate Posted 8 November , 2008 Share Posted 8 November , 2008 JK The entry D/331st Bde 8.3.1919 relates to D Battery of that Brigade. If you want to read about his time from that date there is a War Diary at Kew under WO95/3128 which ends in May 1919. The 79 Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery also has a War Diary under WO95/477.
