South Staffs Regiment

I have a copy of a list which gives details of the entries relating to men who served in the South Staffordshire Regiment

and who are mentioned in the War Diaries. It lists why they are mentioned ie wounded to hospital, KIA, reports etc etc.

Most of the diaries refer only to officers but the 1/5th Battalion War Diary refers to many of the enlisted men and gives their Company.

I do not have access to the actual diary, only the dates in which the men are mentioned.

Happy to do 'look ups'

Graeme

NB Credit to Mr J.C..J. Elson of Hednesford who compiled the list in 1993.

Secondly, any mentions of the city of Lichfield

Thanks for checking

Hi, Graeme,

Congratulations and thanks to you for your generosity and to Mr. Elson for his dedication.

Would you mind having a look for 1103 (later 201486) Pte. Richard Morgan?

He was in the 1/5th and later the 2/6th. I'd be interested in any reference at all.

Best wishes -

Tom

re Clay, Albert Lance Corporal who died 14.3.1917.

He is mentioned in the War Diary of 14.3.17 as KIA 20064 and in Appendix 4 of that month. No other entry.

Sorry, it does not mention anything else nor re Lichfield.

Tom,

The 1/5th Diary has 'Morgan, Lance Corporal 201251 R. Diary of 28.6.17 Wounded'

Nothing for a 201486 Morgan or in 6th WD I'm afraid.

Regards,

Graeme

Mark,

It mentions a Second Lieutenant Albert T. Shortman for 3 April 1916 saying he was wounded on that date.

Is this the same man ?

Graeme

NB I am from Bloxwich area and am looking at the RoH but it does not mention him. Are you a relative or are you researching

local mems. ? (I take it d.7.9.16 means he died of his injuries however I cannot find him in CWGC or SDGW.)

Maurice,

I see that he was in 2nd Battalion.

Unfortunately, like most other War Diaries, the 2nd Battalion diary mostly mentions officers

(an odd smackering of Sergeants are mentioned).

Sorry,

Graeme

Thanks Graeme,

Is there any mention of where he may have died on that date?

Regards Maurice.

Maurice,

I have managed to find out the following, I dont know what you already know.

George William Green

Private 9543, 2nd Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment

Buried in Beinvillers Military Cemetery in Grave XVIII. C. 3, south west of Arras.

Born Aston, resided Hockley and enlisted in Birmingham.

Was drafted to France on Sunday 27 December 1914

Killed while battalion was holding the trenches at Ayette, about 7 miles south of Arras.(probably by shellfire as the sector was quiet at this time BUT not certain as I do not have the War Diary for this date).

Someone else on the Forum may be able to provide the WD for this date.

Regards,

Graeme

Hi Graeme,

Do you have any entries relating to 202420 Pte. Henry John Bemi, 2/5th South Staffs? His previous regimental number is 2715. He was later discharged from the 2nd South Staffs with the rank of Lance Corporal.

Thank you!

Jeff,

Nothing in the listing

BUT did you know his service record exists? Are you a member of Ancestry, it is available there.

Hi Graeme,

I already obtained his service record from Ancestry, but I was hoping you might be able to turn up some additional tidbits. Thank you for checking for me :)

Thomas W Proudlove - South staffs regiment. 1915-1917 fought in the Somme. Injured and sent to Red Cross hospital in Derbyshire.

This was my grandfather and I am taking my mother to France in the New Year to see where he fought. Have researched as much as possible but think records may have been in the burnt records. Have the medal card and will go to the Archives in Kew to find any further info on medal roll. Very grateful if anyone has a mention of him in relevant war diaries.

Thanks very much
