Chris_Baker Posted 29 February , 2004 Share Posted 29 February , 2004 The war diary of the 7th Somerset Light Infantry, for operations in support of the Battle of Mount Sorrel on 13 June 1916, is in handwriting that is not easy to read. It mentions a raiding party of C Company, under a Lieutenant, and try as I might I can't confidently decipher his surname. I cannot find any officer who died on this day or during the next few days whose name resembles it, so I presume he survived the action. Can anyone help me out? His name looks like Peard, or Bard, or Pearce, or ...
rflory Posted 29 February , 2004 Share Posted 29 February , 2004 Chris: Could it be Lt. W W Chard or Lt. E W Pidgeon? Both were serving with the 7th (Service) Battalion in Jan 1916. Regards. Dick Flory
AGWR Posted 29 February , 2004 Share Posted 29 February , 2004 It ws Lt John Peard. He was badly wounded but he survived. A Pte Jenkins brought him back and was awarded a DCM for the trouble. Peard later transferred to the 8th Bn. There is quite a lot on him (and the raid) in Brendon Moorhouse's highly readable book about the 7th Somerset Light Infantry -Forged by Fire, published by Spellmount 2003. Kind Regards AGWR
