reubenayres Posted 2 September , 2008 Share Posted 2 September , 2008 Hi, Sorry to post such a naive question but how do trench map co-ordinates work? I guess they're like most other co-ordinate systms but, for example, how does J.11.c.6.3 actually break down? Also, do the co-ordinates indicate which particular trench map they relate to or do you have to find that out separately? Many thanks Reuben
Tim Godden Posted 2 September , 2008 Share Posted 2 September , 2008 J.11 is the large co-ordinate. J.11 is broken down into four squares; A, B, C and D. C is broken down into eastings and northings. 6 eastings across and 3 northings up. A square, within a square, within a square, within a map! Cheers, Tim
jay dubaya Posted 2 September , 2008 Share Posted 2 September , 2008 Hi Reuben, Tim is right in his explanation, but you'll need to know the sheet number or location for the actual map. If you're looking for a specific battalion etc it will narrow it down considerably, cheers, Jon

reubenayres Posted 2 September , 2008 Author Share Posted 2 September , 2008 Thank-you all very much - that's very helpful. The location I'm interested in is the area of deployment of the 11th Bn Sherwood Foresters on 17th October 1917. I think they were just outside Polygon Wood at the time. Do you know which map or maps would be relevant? Many thanks Reuben
stevem49 Posted 2 September , 2008 Share Posted 2 September , 2008 Might be worthwhile changing the thread to mention 11th SF as I am fairly sure Diaries and Maps are held. Steve m
