Remembered Today:

How many ww1 books?

My love for books inspired me to start this thread and I was curious to know if other Pals collected/accumulated WW1 books like I do?

So how many WW1 books do you own? Not magazines, pamphlets, brochures but bound books?

I was rearranging my book case last night and I took a count. I have 58 1/2 books on WW1. The 1/2 is because I count one book I have, "The Great World War 1914 - 1945", as 1/2 because it covers both wars as one.

Come on all you book nuts let's here from you. B)

Cheers,

Jon

71 books in total and another 12 if you include the osprey books that are associated with WW1. Thats paperbacks and hardbacks.

Double that and add some for all military history topics and well over 150 osprey titles.

God!

Arm.

ps then you get to novels.

Hi Jon

I have the same love of books on the Great War, I have so many draws full of them that I am running out of space to put them. But I do not buy so many books these days as money goes on researching the Shropshires.

I must have over 120, stopped counting a long time ago, but I know of some who have many many more then this.

Apart from about 400 German regimental, divisional and corps histories, I have a few hundred other books about WW1...

I stopped counting my books a long time ago...

This topic runs the risk of running into the "mine's bigger than yours!" variety ;)

When I saw this thread I first guessed at around 100, like Tom I was rather shocked to count them and find around 210.....have not bought any more for 2 months now so I might be a recovering addict.

OK, I confess that I'm smaller than you guys. :(

My collection stands at just 85 books, and about a dozen of the Osprey titles.

At the last count about 90, although I have yet to beat my father whose total stands at well over 500.

Hello

An interesting question. I counted 124 books including 7 or 8 Ospreys.

I have about 600 - 700 books but no more space so I have to purge the bookcase every now and then.

WWI is one of my favourite periods. I have far more Napoleonic books.

I have now started to have some elderly books re-cased. With the bookbinders now are Tyng, Van der Essen and both volumes of Joffre's memoirs. That will cost 136 euro - I could buy a lot of books for that!

Sixty books all bought in the last 10 months since my interest moved to WW1 :o

I have over 150 books covering WW2 and numerous others with a military interest.

I'm quickly running out of space.

236 military books probably 99% of which are WW1 or WW2 - around 70 are WW1 related.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I work with over 330,000 other books where over 8500 are military titles which constantly are changing as new ones come out and others go out of print, so its difficult to know how/when to stop etc...

We have now run out of bookshelves at home...so I need to stop buying books and save to buy a bigger house!

At the moment I am at 112 linear feet of shelf space for WW1 and WW1 related books - I haven't had the time to count them. Dick

Whatever my total is just went up 1. I know a retired Paris pediatrician who lives in the Argonne in Chatel Cherey, very small, wife owns much of the land where Alvin York killed about 25 Germans, captured 125 October 8, 1918. Amazing thing, I asked him about the poilu portrait in house, his grandfather, he was in French Army 14 to 18 so was wife's! Interesting guy.

Grandfather private soldat, asked if he was not promoted, waS he a socialist? " We are ALL socialists!"

Anyway, he has sent book on the village, lots of good war time photos, shop signs in German, shell damage etc,in French of course and they cost $40 for paperback!

WOW! :D I am most impressed. Glad to hear from each of you. I hope more write in.

One reason I'm so glad to hear that so many of the Pals have so many books is that my wife snipes at me from time to time for having so many myself. I will now shamelessly use some of this data as a shield.

I've been asking myself this for some time, so a count: 319 excl. Osprey and museum guides, but including Battleground Europe and the like. Around 50 WW1 DVDs and 100 WW2 books + 100 WW2 DVD's I would guess.

Marco

I currently have 473 Great War Books, 100+ on other military conflicts, 150+ magazines on the Great War, 25 Videos and CD's. After filling all the book shelves the floor space is rapidly deminishing

It's a good job that the builder who put up the loft extension insisted in putting in new joists! Other wise I would be in with the kids.

If anyone knows of a way to pass book shops without entering can you forward me the cure please :D

Great hobby though.

Who's counting?

It's not how many books you have that matters, it's how many you have either read, learnt and inwardly digested or have used as reference.

As for partners opinions, all I can say is that if their opinion counts for little, perhaps they have picked the wrong one. At least Kate and I share the interest and share the bookshelves.

If you have a library, a personal one at home or a public library of one form or another, enjoy and use it. If not, well, why bother .....

Above all, however, history does not truly reside in books or in primary sources in archives. By all means read and collect and research but don't automatically believe the written word - inform yourself and draw your own conclusions at the end of the day.

I could not agree with you more Martin, I can say I've read every one of my books, well except for the 9 OH, I only dip into them for references, I think my brain would explod if I sat down to read one from start to finish
