I have just discovered I have a relative who died in WW1. He was 20792 Pte A E Lamb who joined 2 Bn KOYLI in early 1915 (but I don't know when, or where he would have done his basic training). We do know he embarked from Hull for Flanders in April, and three weeks later was killed (posted as missing) on 7 May 1915 in a battle for the 'Zwartellen Salient'.

He is listed on the Menin Gate.

Fairly new to all this - how can I find out about his short time in uniform?

Grateful for any help. Many thanks.

Kerry,

Just to give you an idea of the place he died. In fact it is 'Zwarteleen' which is a hamlet of Zillebeke. It is very close to Hill 60 one of the most feared places, by the soldiers, in the Ypres Salient.

Many thanks Jacky. Can you recommend a book or publication that describes the battles there? Thanks.

Kerry,

Although I have not seen a copy myself, my notes remind me to look out for a copy of The History of the KOYLI in the Great War by Lt Col Reginald C Bond ; pub. Percy Lund, Humphries & Co 1930.

One of the men I am researching is Lt FJM Chubb 2nd KOYLI, who died alongside his best friend from Cambridge Lt Robin Williams on 18 April 1915.
