Remembered Today:

Name on War memorial

Hi all

On our Church War memorial near Rochdale Lancashire, there are about twenty names of casualties who died belonging within the Parish. Their christian names only carry the initial and their surname ie F.Smith, G.Jones etc

However totally out of sequence as one might say is the name "Ada Kay". The fact this unlike the others appears to be a name and not an initial makes me think it was done to highlight a female casualty! There is no record on CWGC of a casualty be the name of Ada Kay.

Any ideas or thoughts much appreciated.

Lots of possible reasons. Apart from the "usual" reasons:

Died at sea as a passenger.

Munitions worker or similar (knowing the part of world you're from might she have been working at the Hooley Hill ammo. factory in Ashton under Lyne - 43 killed in the explosion in 1917.

Etc

No longer engaged on war work - like Gertrude Powicke

Working on current best bet that she's the nurse, you now need Forum member Sue Light -who is rock goddess of nurse research - and may have come across her.

Worth downloading the MIC to see what's what first.

  • 2 weeks later...

If she was a civilian she wouldn't be listed by the CWGC. This only happened from WW2 onwards, which is one of the reasons why tracking down female casualties of war is so difficult.
