Year of death 1916 or 1917?

My apologies if I've posted in the wrong section but I came across this today. Maybe someone would like to look into it.

There appears to be a problem with the year of death given for Pte. Frederick John COE. 2/Yorkshire Rgt. Which source is correct? The battalion was heavily involved in action near Sanctuary Wood on 31st July 1917 but I don't know about 31st July 1916 on the Somme.

SDGW = 31/7/17

GRO = 1917

CWGC = 31/7/16 on Thiepval Memorial.
