Private R4/210936 William James INWOOD. Army Service Corps. No2 Remount Depot (Woolwich). Formerly Bedfordshire Regiment (National Reserve). Died Pulmonary Tubercolosis T.B 19 November 1918 at 98 Clarendon Place, Dover, Kent. Resided 124 Belgrave Avenue, Woodstone, Hampshire? Husband of Maria Jane Inwood (nee May) of 124 Belgrave Avenue, Woodstone, Hampshire? Married 23rd July 1900 at Woodstone, Hampshire. Buried 25 November 1918 Churchyard of St Peter & St Paul, River, Dover, Kent.

William’s parents resided in River, Dover, Kent.

Enlisted into the National Reserve (Bedfordshire Regiment) 6th December 1915.

War Service

Discharged – No longer fit for further war service 8th April 1918 (Woolwich) aged 40 years

TOTAL WAR SERVICE: 2 Years, 122 Days

Awarded a Full Army Disability Pension - from 20th March 1918 (Ministry of Pensions Case No: VT4D,5390). Intended residence – 3, Westbury Road, Dover, Kent.

William was kicked out the army suffering from Pulmonary Tubercolosis (T.B) which was obviously caught whilst on active service overseas. He died of the SAME disease only a few months later! This case should be a straightforward approval.

1. William James INWOOD, born Apr 1878 in Dover (Kent), census 1881 at 54 Maison Dieu Road, Charlton, Dover (Kent), census 1891 in River, near Dover (Kent), census 1901 at 95 Oswald Road, Buckland, Dover (Kent), resided 1915 at 124 Belsize Avenue, Woodston (Hunts), occupation 1901 Clerk (Co-operative Society). Occupation 1915 Labourer. Attested for service 8 Dec 1915 at Peterborough, and was placed on the reserve list until 25 Jul 1916. Enlisted 26 Jul 1916 at Huntingdon, Private - RX4/210936 - Army Service Corps (Remounts), and underwent basic training until 25 Aug 1916. Posted to France 26 Aug 1916 where he served until 13 Jan 1918. He was returned to England 14 Jan 1918 due to illness. An Army Medical Board at Horton (County of London) War Hospital, Epsom, examined his case on 18th Mar 1918, and determined a 60% disability due to Pulmonary Tuberculosis. They further determined that this was of a permanent nature and that his condition was “directly attributable to his war service”. He was discharged as permanently unfit for further military service at Woolwich Dockyard on 8 Apr 1918, with a recommendation that he seek out-patient treatment, and was awarded a standard military disability pension. His intended place of residence after discharge was given as 3 Westbury Road, Dover (Kent). He died on 19th November 1918 (from Tuberculosis) at 98 Clarendon Place, Dover (Kent) aged 40. He was buried on Monday 25th November 1918 at Ss Peter & Paul, River near Dover (Kent). [Representations will be made to the Ministry of Defence to obtain full “war-dead” status for William, and a listing for him on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission roll of honour].

William had married Maria Jane MAY, 23 Jul 1900 at St Andrew, Buckland, Dover (Kent), born Abt 1877 in Dover (Kent), census 1901 at 95 Oswald Road, Buckland, Dover (Kent), resided 1915 at 124 Belsize Avenue, Woodston (Hunts), resided 1918 at 98 Clarendon Place, Dover (Kent), resided 1933 at 94 Clarendon Place, Dover (Kent).
