Ivor Lee Posted 24 February , 2004 Share Posted 24 February , 2004 Rowan There is, I am afraid, verylittle information on 936 Artisan Employment Company. As the name suggests the Company was made up of men with specialist skills (tradesmen) such as carpenters, bricklayers, tinsmiths, plumbers, fitters etc. The only references I have seen to 936 Company specifically are: 27 November 1917 this Company was beng used to build an Officers Mess as 4 bricklayers were sent to join the Company. But there is no reference to where they were working. 15 August 1918 they were working in 5th Army area, located at La Trimand. No reference to what they were doing. 2 December 1918 they were in the Calais area. The Company was formed in November 1917. Many of its members were transferred to this Company from other Labour Corps companies because of their specialist skills. It worked in the 3rd Army area from then until July 1918 when it moved to the 5th Army area. In October and November 1918 they were in the Etaples area and then as mentioned above in the Calais area. However there are no further references to it after this move although it appears to have continued to be in existence until September 1919. The Company did not keep its own War Diary and, as you can see, is rarely mentioned in the War Diaries that are still in existance. Sorry I cannot be more helpful. Could you please publish his name and number so I can add it to my database.
