claymore Posted 4 August , 2008 Share Posted 4 August , 2008 In December 1919/January 1920, the 84th Labour Company and the 26 GRU cleared the area around Pillegrems Farm (Houthem) at trench map coordinates 28.O.23.b.95.95 and located the body of 2Lt JVA Gleed, who was the pilot of the Sopwith 1-1/2 Strutter in which my relative, Lt JB Fotheringham, was the navigator. His body has never been found. Would anyone have the map of that time period that they can provide? Map co-ordinates were supplied by GWGC. Thank you. AlanCurragh Posted 5 August , 2008 Share Posted 5 August , 2008 Here you go, Kim, a map from Sept. 1918 showing 23b and also the farm. The spot indicated by the co-ordinates is just about at the second "l" of the word "Fly Bldgs". The map has come from the "Linesman" trench map package. Hope this helps Alan
claymore Posted 6 August , 2008 Author Share Posted 6 August , 2008 Thank you. This is excellent, but opens up a can of worms. Our relative, Lt JB Fotheringham, is listed as having been buried at Pillegrems Farm by the Germans, just to the south-east. Question is why would his pilot have been buried up to the north-west? As the CWGC grave register lists 2Lt Gleed as "having died of wounds sustained in aerial combat", my thought is that perhaps Fotheringham was dead at the crash site, and buried at the German HQ at Pillegrems Farm. Gleed survived the crash, and was moved to the Fly Buildings area (hospital?), where he succumbed to his injuries and was buried there. Thanks again. Interested in any comments from experts out there. Kim
