Stebie9173 Posted 27 July , 2008 Share Posted 27 July , 2008 London Gazette 16-11-1915 9088 Drummer L. H. Tucker, 2nd Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty on the night of the 2nd/3rd October, 1915, near Vermelles. The Germans expected an attack by us, and the fire on both sides was very heavy, in addition to which flares were being constantly sent up. Drummer Tucker was ceaseless in his efforts to bring in the wounded men who were lying between our own and the enemy's lines. On one occasion he was fired on by our own men, who were unable to distinguish who he was. He continued this work until after daylight, exhibiting marked courage. http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ViewPDF.a....%20H.%20Tucker The bandsmen of a battalion often acted as stretcher bearers for the battalion during battle.
