Morning Pals,

I'm looking for any info on this soldier.

He was KIA on 07 May 1916 aged 35 and is buried at Ration Farm.

I would appreciate any info about the 2nd Batt Leinster's over this period.

Many thanks in advance

Martyn

2nd Leinsters were part of the 73rd Brigade.

In April 1916 they were in the line in front of Messines which was quite. On 29/30 April there was a gas attack by the Germans followed by a German assault. Purpose of the raid was to destroy a mine shaft being prepared by North Staffordshires of 72nd Bde. 2nd Leinsters suffered 55 casualties of which 19 were gassed and less than half a dozen killed. This was a new type of gas and some men died who had been affected and took exercise within 24 hours of the attack.

Nothing else mentioned in "The Prince of Wales Leinster Regiment" by Whitton for the particular day this man was killed.

SDGW gives:

Scarlett, Walter, b. Collingbourne Wilts, enlisted Devizes, 1131 Cpl; k. in a. France & Flanders 7/5/1916. Formerly 13254 Wiltshire Regiment
