70th Brigade RGA - OOB Lookup please?

Hello all,

In Annex M to Farndale's History of the RRA Western Front he gives the OOB for the Royal Artillery at the Armistice.

Within the Second Army list he gives, in the section for RGA Brigades, two entries for 70th Brigade; the second being out of sequence:

65 (How. 9.2") ...

70 (How. 9.2") 15, 157, 217 (How. 6"), 12 (How. 9.2")

77 (Mixed) ...

86 (Mobile) ...

87 (Mobile) ...

70 (How. 8") 282, 285, 405 (How. 6"), 151 (How. 8")

Also the batteries in the second version appear under 99th Brigade in WO 95 (but only to January 1918).

Can anyone resolve this anomaly?

Kind Regards,

SMJ

Hello again Simon

Yes, the second one should be 90th, not 77th. The IWM reprint of the Nov 1918 OOB confirms this.

Farndale was not well served by his researchers when the appendices were compiled. Other mistakes are as follows:

Page 353: Annex D, part f: 107, 108, C and D(H) Batteries belonged to 23 Army Fd Art Bde, not 33

125 Bde Was not a RHA Bde and did not have a 4.5-inch how batt. Its correct designation and composition was as shown in part g just below on the same page. The same erropr appears on page 380 but 411 Batt is wrongly shown as a how batt, whereas it had 18-pdrs..

Page 381: the third 6-inch batt in 19 Bde RGA was 321, not 231.

Under AA Bty, 230 was a 3-inch section, not 13-pdr.

Page 382: the "ghost second 70th" should be 99th as already mentioned.

Pages 383-384: both 16 Army Bde RHA and 232 Army FA Bde were in Fourth Army, not Third. Also, 500, 503 and 525 6-inch gun batts are listed twice.

Pages 385-386: The half-battery 471* and one half of 456 were in Fourth Army, not Fifth.

All this presupposes that the IWM OOB for Nov 1918, itself a copy of one at Kew, is correct, which in fact may not be the case! I have studied the Kew OOBs fairly carefully and there are a number of minor inconsistencies.

See also my concurrent reply re 49 Bde RGA, where Farndale got it right.
