michaeldr Posted 11 July , 2008 Share Posted 11 July , 2008 Whilst looking for someone else today, I came across the following casualty (see http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...casualty=913642) Name: WESTON, JOSEPH Initials: J Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Captain Regiment/Service: King's Royal Rifle Corps Unit Text: 14th Bn. attd. 9th Bn. Age: 30 Date of Death: 17/10/1915 Additional information: (Served as CRUIKSHANKS). Son of Mrs. Clara Weston, of 77, Woodstock Rd., Bedford Park, Chiswick, London. Served in the Bombay Police; was awarded the Durban Medal. Appointed Signaller on H.M.S. "Empress of Asia" at Hong Kong Gazetted, Jan., 1915. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 51 and 53. Memorial: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL I understand that it was not unknown for a man to serve under another name, but how unusual was it for an officer to do so? Also, Bombay Police, signaler on HMS Empress of Asia, then Captain in the KRRC; a colourful career, can anyone tell us more? [PS: In view of the Bombay Police entry, I take that the Durban Medal should read Durbar Medal] regards Michael
