Procat Posted 9 July , 2008 Share Posted 9 July , 2008 Don't think it is you Andrew, A search using Geoffs search engine at: http://www.hut-six.co.uk/cgi-bin/search2.php also failed to find him. I tried by service number and also last name and date of death. Doug

John_Hartley Posted 9 July , 2008 Share Posted 9 July , 2008 But before doing anything I'd suggest Andrew contact Terry Denham just to check that the matter isnt already known to CWGC. I don't see him listed in the Overseas Deaths Register so proving that he died will be difficult. SDGW is reliable so can't be used as sole evidence. Similarly, without other information, the MIC may in itself be wrong. Three pssible sources spring to mind. Firstly the war diary may have information - although looking at the death of death we can assume there was chaos in the retreat and records may not be accurate. His service file, if it exists, may have the information. And, finally, and only as extra corroboration, a newspaper obituary. John
NeilEvans Posted 9 July , 2008 Share Posted 9 July , 2008 Just out of curiosity. Andrew mentions he has the memorial plaque. When memorial plaques were being produced at Acton and Woolwich, where did the information come from regarding the names? the IWGC? Neil
ANDREW JUKES Posted 9 July , 2008 Author Share Posted 9 July , 2008 firstly my mistake the medals and plaque are indeed named to march not marsh and i have corrected my original post. however he was indeed a kia and i do have his plaque any other thoughts? cheers andrew
John_Hartley Posted 9 July , 2008 Share Posted 9 July , 2008 I had already checked the GRO under March as well as Marsh so previous advice stands. Although there are some differing details, I spot this chap, died a few days before - another J March, Northumberland Fusiliers - clickety click. Co-incidence or the basis for an error in recording or the man the plaque refers to ? John
ANDREW JUKES Posted 11 July , 2008 Author Share Posted 11 July , 2008 with a little help from terry denham i have sent for the late soldiers death certificate and will await the results terry confirms that this chap is uncommemorated cheers andrew

Neil_York Posted 13 September , 2008 Share Posted 13 September , 2008 Please see below the death certificate, memorial plaque and medal index card relating to John March. I hold the GRO certificate should a copy be required for presentation to the CWGC. I can't say whether his service file exists in WO363 at Kew but I think there is probably sufficient evidence without it. Thanks to John Morcombe for providing the MIC. Terry Denham Posted 14 September , 2008 Share Posted 14 September , 2008 This case has been submitted for commemoration through the GWF system as requested by Neil. I will report back. Note that the death certificate quotes him as being 14th battalion rather than the 9th as in the first post. (The battalion number is often written below the rank on these certificates). Chris_Baker Posted 15 September , 2008 Share Posted 15 September , 2008 He was not with 14th Bn throughout - they arrived in France in September 1915. 9th landed on date given on MIC.
