Andrew P Posted 8 July , 2008 Share Posted 8 July , 2008 Thanks for mentioning John Campbell Terry. A few years ago I contacted DVA about him as in Fremantle Cemetery the plaque on his headstone referred in fact to Lt John Campbell of the 12th Battalion who was killed in Belgium 28th December 1917 and who is buried at Kandahar Farm Cemetery rather than to John Campbell of the 10th LH who died locally. Both being Freo boys a mix up seems to have occured somewhere along the line so am very happy to see that it has now been sorted and No.247 Trooper John Campbell is now commemorated officially. Trooper John Campbell was a 44 year old Butcher from North Fremantle when he enlisted into the AIF. He had previously served in the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa as well as the Victorian Permanent Artillery. He served at Gallipoli from May to September 1915 and was invalided home in 1916 Regards Andrew
Andrew P Posted 8 July , 2008 Share Posted 8 July , 2008 This is/was the plaque on Campbell's grave which commemorated Lt Campbell rather than Trooper Campbell. Hopefully this plaque will soon be fixed.
frev Posted 8 July , 2008 Share Posted 8 July , 2008 Cheers to Tpr John Campbell - another soldier who can rest, knowing his sacrifice is acknowledged. And cheers Drew, for bringing this to the attention of the authorities. Let's hope that new plaque is on its way.
