Not a familiar Irish cap badge to me .. is it at all possible he was in Irish Defence Forces (the army of the republic which emerged from the 'old' IRA?). Just a guess by the way.

his kit looks pretty new, the cap also looks new and in shape, no rifle sling. i read in some other thread about some regiments that were being formed didn`t have any [or enough] cap badges so they used a temporary badge until the qm could issue the proper ones. also ,is that a watch chain in his pocket, if so ,would that be allowed to be worn ?.

I cannot see it enough to say for certain its an Irish Army badge but one other observation is that he is not holdng the rifle correctly which might indicate that he had no training....yet.

I don't think that this is FSA, the cap is all wrong, it could be Irish National Volunteers, if there was a better shot of the cap badge, that might help ? Peter
