Remembered Today:

Private 528309 James Herbert James Non-Comm

redescort

Recommended Posts

I have just put forward Private 528309 James Herbert James of the Labour Corps formerly Private 4062 3/5th Suffolk Regiment. Is there a generous chap or lady come to that, who could possibly locate his grave and photograph the headstone for me assuming it has one.

On his attestation form his address is given as 48 Queens Road Northampton, when discharged from hospital his address is given as 23 Vernon Terrace Northampton.

On his death certificate his father is shown as the informant of 37 Lorne Road Northampton which is where he died. From his service record his widow Daisy Letitia James is shown as living at 22 Vernon Terrace Northampton.

I cannot make out all the details from his service record but where he is buried is ??????? Cemetery Northampton Grave No 2509 Division D.

Regards

Ray

He was entered on the Northampton War Memorial list (prepared by the British Legion) as a Lance Corporal, of 31 Murray Avenue, Northampton. The list was used to create the Northampton War Memorial on Abington Square (J to K panel below).

What date of death do you have Ray? Can you post an image of the death certificate? Please tell me it is not Billing Road Cemetery.

He was appointed unpaid Lance corporal 12/Jul/1916, paid 1/Jan/1917 after joining the 573 Agric Coy he reverted to Pte on request and was discharged on the 2/Sep/1918 as a Pte.

He died 30/Jul/1921, death certificate rather large to post PM me your email and I will send you a copy.

From his records here is a scan of the burial details.

Northampton Echo Tues 2 Aug 21

On July 30 at 37 Lorne Road, Herbert, the dearly-beloved husband of Daisy James, and second son of Mr & Mrs J James; after a long and painful illness patiently borne. At rest, age 26

a few days later:

37 Lorne Road

The widow and relatives of the late Herbert James wish to sincerely thank all friends and neighbours for their kind sympathy in their sad bereavement; also floral tributes sent."

The announcement appeared in both local daily papers, but I could find no story, and unfortunately no mention of his funeral details. I ordered the Northampton Independent 15 minutes before closing time, but when I loaded it onto the viewer, the film had been wound incorrectly, and only gave a reverse image, so I'm afraid that and the other papers will have to await another visit.

By the way, the odd numbered side of Lorne Road no longer exists. It was demolished around 1970.

Ray,

I have just spoken with an officer of the NBC cemeteries department. He checked the computer system, but nothing on that (as he expected) as that only holds records going back to the 1940s. He needs to check the old cemetery ledgers (at least three, and potentially seven) but cannot do it straightaway as he has to fit it around funerals etc. Do you mind waiting a few days for a result? The gentleman is ex-army himself and takes particular interest in the military burials, so Herbert's final resting place will be revealed shortly.

News from our good samaritan at the Cemetries Department, who rang this morning while I was out.

Pte James was buried on 4th August 1921 in Billing Road Cemetery. Many of the headstones have been removed over the years, and it is now as much a park as a cemetery. Pte James plot is unmarked, though at present I do not know if that was always the case, or if the headstone has been removed in the intervening years.

I can ask for a plastic marker to be placed on the plot, but must do this just before an intended visit, as the markers have a habit of disappearing, or are removed as a matter of policy (which explains why I could not find the promised marker of the grave of a family friend last year).

Sorry to be the bearer of disappointing news. I'll get back to you and the council.

A couple of images can be found here

Chris,

Where did you send the e-mail?

Pleased to help.

It is strange they haven't replied, unless they have a backlog. The chap I spoke to was helpfulness itself. I will pm his name to you and Ray for future reference.

Kate Chris

Great news if you have found the grave hopefully have a stone erected at some point. Looking on the CWGC site for Billing Road Cemetery it shows that all the commemorations are on a screen wall are there not any CWGC stones in this cemetery.

I have had another word with the cemeteries department, who tell me he is in an unmarked grave in Kingsthorpe Cemetery (which on other side of town to Billing Road). They have visited the plot to check what is there. He is buried near the Chapel, and they have given me the names of the flanking graves (Coles and Stanton) so it should be easy to find. My family is buried there too. I will go along soon and take a photo if it helps. The Cemeteries Department are keen to be kept informed of progress, and happy to help.
