Chris_Baker Posted 20 March , 2009 Share Posted 20 March , 2009 Being no expert on the flyboys, I find tracking down the locations of RFC/RAF training units quite difficult. Is there an existing central reference anywhere? If not, could we start a list here? Maybe the TDS's too? I have two I am particularly interested in 39 Training Squadron 45 Training Squadron. All help gratefully received.

Chris_Baker Posted 21 March , 2009 Author Share Posted 21 March , 2009 Gareth, that's brilliant. Thanks very much. Would you mind if I turned it into a page on the LLT - perhaps more easily found there, if I structure it right?

jhill Posted 21 March , 2009 Share Posted 21 March , 2009 From S.F. Wise Canadian Airmen and the First World War, I gather the following: Royal Flying Corps (Canada), later Royal Air Force (Canada) formed early in 1917. There were to be twenty training squadrons, known as 78 to 97 (Canadian) Reserve Squadrons, which in June 1917 were redesignated as Canadian Training Squadrons (CTS). Eventually they were all located in Southern Ontario, with the exception of those moved temporarily to Fort Worth, Texas over the winter of 1917 - 1918. While waiting for nucleus flights to arrive from England, a unit called 'X' Squadron began flying at Long Branch in February 1917. 79 Squadron began flying at Camp Borden in March 1917. By 10 April Squadrons 78 to 82 were flying there. In May 'X' Squadron moved to Camp Rathbun, to be joined there by the new 86 Squadron, while 83, 84, and 87 were at Camp Mohawk. By early July Long Branch hosted 'Y' Squadron as well as 88, 89, and 90 Squadrons, previously formed at Deseronto, and 91 Squadron. In October, 1917, the structure was this: 42 (BORDEN) Wing No 78 CTS No 79 CTS No 81 CTS No 82 CTS School of Aerial Gunnery 43 (DESERONTO) Wing No 80 CTS No 83 CTS No 84 CTS No 85 CTS No 86 CTS No 87 CTS 44 (NORTH TORONTO) Wing No 88 CTS No 89 CTS No 90 CTS No 91 CTS No 92 CTS In the spring of 1918 42 Wing moved from Camp Borden to Deseronto and 44 Wing from North Toronto to Camp Borden. Between November 1917 and April 1918 42 and 43 Wings were at Fort Worth Texas. The complex was known as Camp Taliaferro, with three aerodromes, Hicks, Everman, and Benbrook Fields. Also under RFC/RAF (Canada) were the 17th, 22nd,27th,28th, and 139th Aero Squadrons, although as the arrangement was a delicate one I don't know how it stood on official documents. I hope I have transcribed these accurately.

yossarian Posted 8 November , 2012 Share Posted 8 November , 2012 Gents, I'm researching Maj Arthur Keen's flying life and have similarly found that digging out detail on Training and Reserve Squadrons is not easy. My man was briefly with 14 ® Sqn from 27th Dec 1915 and transfered to 18 ® Sqn on 18th January 1916. His letters have him with this unit until July '16 when he joined 70 Sqn and the following month went to France. Letters and a bravery award have Arthur in Montrose (BE2c) and possibly flying this DH2 (A2582). He may have been undertaking advanced training or even instructing. Given that it wasn't unusual for talented individulas to be 'creamed off' to instruct. Given that training around this time was not normally extended due to mnpower (pilot) demands from the Front. Additionally during a rest tour he was with 34 & 44 ® Sqns from early Dec '16 until April '17 when he was posted to '40 in France. Does anyone have any thoughts while I sort through the data brought through by Gareth for Chris above?

Can anyone tell me anything about the location or activities of 93rd and 194th Training Squadrons in the Middle East in 1918?

mickdavis Posted 2 July , 2016 Share Posted 2 July , 2016 35 TS was at Port Meadow (Oxford) in January 1918, as a higher Training Squadron for prospective Bristol F2B pilots. 35 TDS didn't form until 17 July 1918, initially at Thetford and moving to Duxford on 21 August, tasked with training day light bombing pilots for DH9s. Mangoman Posted 2 July , 2016 Share Posted 2 July , 2016 My man enlisted on 28.12.1917 and was posted to 35 TS on 2.1.1918 as a 2nd Class Aircraft Mechanic and became a 3rd Class AM on 1.4.1918. I am trying to establish what happened to him in order for him to be hospitalised but what I have found out is that he was discharged from the Beaufort War Hospital on 25.5.1918 and died at home and was buried in our local graveyard on 16.2.1919. quemerford Posted 2 July , 2016 Share Posted 2 July , 2016 Perfect! I suspect he succumbed to the flu epidemic, and that his discharge may have been unrelated. Would be interested to hear however.

Renick Posted 2 August , 2020 Share Posted 2 August , 2020 Hi Guys Sorry to be reviving an old thread here but I'm looking for information on a Reserve Squadron a relation of mine (T.Capt. Robert R. Reeder, Manchester Reg, RFC) trained with. His records say after transfer to the RFC he went to Reading (on 18/9/16) then to Eygpt, Mid East Bgde (on 11/12/16), to 15 RS (on 15/4/17), finally to 53 Sq, France (on 25/4/17). Does anyone have any idea at what point and where he would have done his flying training? 10 days at 15 RS (I guess Reserve Squadron??) does not seem like enough time to get his wings so I assume he trained in Egypt? I'm guessing Reading would be in reference to No.1 School of Military Aeronautics so I would presume the next posting would be to a Training Squadron. I see that there were 7 training schools in Egypt in 1917, do any records of these exist? Any assistance would be most appreciated cheers!
