Peter - from a brief entry in "Fallen Officers" in The Times of 5th September 1916 it adds he was educated at Hymer's College, Hull and was a partner in Messrs Dumoulin and Gosschalk - Merchants and Importers, Hull. From what I can find with a quick google they were wool and hide merchants in Hull - and this was shown as his Dutch born father Edward's occupation in the 1891 census - (can't find them quickly in 1901)

From that census his eldest brother was Maurice (14) - he may well have been the Maurice responsible for founding the law firm in Hull - Gosschalks -

http://www.gosschalks.co.uk/history.asp

Looks like at least 2 of his brothers also served

Medal card of Gosschalk, Herman Joseph (12 in 1891)

Corps Regiment No Rank

East Yorkshire Regiment Major

Territorial Force Reserve Major

4th East Yorkshire Regiment Major

and

Medal card of Gosschalk, Frederick (2 in 1891)

Corps Regiment No Rank

4th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment Second Lieutenant

4th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment Second Lieutenant

Cheers

Sue
