You could download the relevant war diaries from the National Archives and build up a picture of his wartime journey. Free to download once a free registration is submitted - search page here. Just search 2 Norfolk and 9 Norfolk, One suspects he didn't arrive overseas prior to 31st December 1915, you could search similar numbers which may offer a window of when he enlisted and any units he may have served with prior to being posted overseas.

Bit of a mixed bag in terms of near numbers.

29952 Frederick Charles Blyth has Silver War Badge records that show him enlisted 12th March 1915. Qualified for the Victory Medal and British War Medal only. Discharged 26/07/1918 KR392(xvi) Wounds

29959 John Albert Ginn has Silver War Badge records that show him enlisted 11th December 1915. Qualified for the Victory Medal and British War Medal only. Discharged 11/07/1918 KR392(xvi) Wounds

29969 Edwin Paternoster has Silver War Badge records that show him enlisted 19th November 1915. Qualified for the Victory Medal and British War Medal only. Discharged 07/07/1917 KR392(xvi) Gastric Dilation He also has surviving service records but I don't have subscription access to be able to see them.

29970 Gilbert Tooley has Silver War Badge records that show him enlisted 11th December 1915. Qualified for the Victory Medal and British War Medal only. Discharged 14/09/1917 KR392(xvi) - Neaurasthenia

Suspect it may be a mix of transfer ins and mobilised Derby Scheme men.

A search for Cox 29956 on the British Newspaper Archive brings up an entry in a Casualty List that appeared in the edition of the Suffolk and Essex Free Press dated 18th April 1917. His next of kin informed of his wounding was living at Saffron Walden. A bit more information such as Theatre of War may be available via subscription access. Unfortunately that is around about the time The Times started excluding Other Ranks wounded from the Official Casualty Lists they were publishing.

Cheers,
Peter

The Casualty List at the end of the 9th Battalion War Diary for March 1917 shows 29956 Cox, L.S. of A Company wounded on the 12th March.

The War Diary entry for that day reads "1 O.R. acc. wounded. Much rain during the early hours, trenches very muddy."

The Battalion had gone into the front line on the 9th, relieving the 9th Suffolks.

Peter

  • kenf48 changed the title to Leonard Sydney Fox 29956 9th Norfolk Regiment

May be a red herring, so treat with caution, but FindMyPast have indexed a Leonard Cox on the 1921 Census of England & Wales who was born Saffron Walden c1890, and who was in a household in the same town. The only other resident is a Henry Cox, born Saffron Walden, c1853.
More details will be available via subscription \ purchase.

May be a co-incidence but the birth of a Leonard “Sidney” Cox, mothers’ maiden name Cox, was registered in the Saffron Walden District of Essex in the January to March quarter, (Q1), of 1889. Then as now you had 42 days after the event to register the birth. The General Registrars Office then reported by quarter registered, which isn’t automatically the same as quarter born. Note: There is a death registered in the Saffron Walden District in Q3 1971 for a Leonard “Sidney” Cox who was born on the 18th December 1888. Because of the 42 days to register that date of birth is not incompatible with an early Q1 1889 registration.

On the 1891 Census of England & Wales there is a 2 year old Leonard Cox, born Saffron Walden, who was recorded in a dwelling on Bridge Street, Saffron Walden. This was the household of his parents, Henry, (38, Brewers Cellarman, born Saffron Walden), and Jane, (aged 37, born Saffron Walden). The couples other children living with them are:-
Charles H……..aged 16…born Saffron Walden…..Bakers Assistant
George Henry…aged 11…born Saffron Walden….Errand Boy
Herbert John….aged 8……born Saffron walden
Flora…………..aged 5…...born Saffron Walden

The family were probably still living in the same house on the 1901 Census of England & Wales schedule, but now it is shown as 16 Bridge Street. Father Henry, (48), was still a Brewers Cellarman and lives there with wife Jane, (47),  and children George H., (21, General Labourer), Flora, (15), and Leonard S., (12).

The 49 year old Jane Cox would pass away in the Saffron Walden District in Q1 1903.

On the 1911 Census of England & Wales the 58 year old widower Henry Cox, a Brewers Cellarman from Saffron Walden, was recorded as the head of the household at 1 Mill Field, Saffron Walden. Living with him are his married daughter Flora Coe and her husband George, and his unmarried son Leonard Cox, aged 22 and a Butcher, born Saffron Walden.

The 1939 Register has a bit of an odd entry that might be him according to the indexing on FindMyPast. Looking at the orginal entry, (also available on Ancestry), will hopefully clarify things but I suspect it may indicate he is living with married sister Flora Coe and her family.

As mentioned earlier there is a likely death for a Leonard “Sidney” Cox, born 18th December 1888, which was registered in the Saffron Walden District in the July to September quarter, (Q3), of 1971. There is no obvious entry for him in the UK Probate Calendar. There is a picture of the headstone he shares with father Henry in Saffron Walden Cemetery on Find a Grave. He died on the August 28th 1971. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/122995683/leonard-sidney-cox
