Tawhiri Posted 15 April Share Posted 15 April We established in your previous thread that the grandfather of the two primary individuals that were named in that thread, Richard Isaac Barre Spencer and Barre Spencer, was William Henry Spencer, who at the time of his marriage in South Africa in 1857 was serving with the Queen's Royal Regiment. Unfortunately the marriage registration doesn't give the names of the parents of either party, but in the 1871, 1891, and 1901 England and Wales censuses William Henry's birthplace is consistently given as Oxford, Oxfordshire, and his age indicates a birth around 1832/33. 1871 census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KZGN-QVB 1891 census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QN7P-J6Z 1901 census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9X7-GD9 Unfortunately statutory birth registration in England only started in 1837, so prior to this you are limited primarily to parish records, but the christening of a William Henry Spencer, parents Isaac Spencer and Martha Harriette Phipps, born on 11 June 1832, and christened on 11 July 1832 was recorded in Oxford, Oxfordshire, which looks like a possible fit. 1832 christening - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J7S5-FZ4 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSHW-T8VN There seems to be a reasonably well-documented family tree on FamilySearch that suggests that Isaac came from a long line of Isaac Spencer's from Yorkshire, so the Barre connection, if there is one, would appear to be through his wife. This same family tree suggests that Martha was born around 1801 in Clontarf, County Dublin, Ireland, the daughter of William Phipps. Given that Isaac Barre was also from Dublin that may be where a possible connection lies, the alternative would be through William Henry Spencer's wife, Mary Lamont Lucas. There certainly doesn't seem to be a direct connection through the paternal Spencer line however.

I have a newspaper entry that confirms WH Spencer, which reads, grandson of major Spencer Royal West Surrey Regt and the late lieutenant R Stainforth Bengal Staff corps, (Henrietta father I presume)
