If another member messages, will you post more please? Edit. Paul Nixon’s site, British Army Ancestors, would provide a welcoming home for any named postcards. I’m sorry to hear that John, it was just one member after all. It’s always wonderful to see the quality images here, regardless of regiment or how many there are. I hope that you might reconsider. I for one will be happy to see them. I’ve studied British military uniform since a teenager and it is personal and family photos in this and other forums that have revealed so much detail that was hitherto unavailable, or incomplete. The forum is a wonderful resource, but it wouldn’t be anything without those like you who contribute so generously. I have learned so much as a result. Pat Atkins Posted 12 January , 2023 Share Posted 12 January , 2023 My two pennorth: as a general rule, change should be directed towards the capacity of a resource to fulfill its stated purpose. @trenchtrotter started the thread (thanks, by the way!) saying "I thought it might be a nice idea to start a thread to illustrate members postcards of soldiers in uniform. It could act as a good general reference thread and also show insignia etc." Does it still do that? Has it developed beyond this? My position re the postcards thread is as beneficiary - I'm generalist, amateur, inexpert and fascinated by most of what's posted there. For such members, I believe the thread works fine as an ongoing and eclectic collection with a lively and informed set of contributors. I appreciate it may not for the experts/specialists, of course. Despite its the cumbersomeness, the thread remains for me @FROGSMILE's "best worst option" and I don't need it to change. I'm not arguing against change, however. I don't contribute postcards (haven't got any), and therefore I don't claim any right to an active say in this debate; just wanted to remind everyone that us lurkers enjoy it too! 4thGordons Posted 12 January , 2023 Share Posted 12 January , 2023 Whilst I have opined on the search function, I haven't thrown in my 2p on the basic question so for what it is worth I find this thread enjoyable to browse and look through new posts and occasionally I return to it to look for something specific that I think I recall seeing or to check the detail or information provided. SO, short answer - yes I think it is more than fit for purpose, and long may it continue. Chris

I started this one so I believe it is up to me to close it and warmly thank all who got involved ....... it even drew the odd "lurker" out the woodwork - thanks Pat. I read we are broadly in agreement this is a fantastic resource, and equally in agreement that invaluable comments do become overwhelmed by concurrent activity. The broad consensus leans towards contentment so any future change of direction is considered unnecessary. "The Ayes to the right, The Noes to the left, So the Noes have it, the Noes have it." I too look forward to seeing another 400 pages......and the associated 8000-ish associated worthy comments from my fellow Forum-ites.

You are indeed a kind and generous individual GB. Your comment motivates me to respond but sadly I must confess I lack your tact and patience. It is my personal opinion that any contribution, so generously submitted, is of value to us all and deserves our grateful acknowledgement. To dismiss any contribution, or discourage a contribution within an open Forum, surely denies us all the opportunity to research, comment and benefit from the most minute, scattered detail pertaining to those now long departed? Personally, I sincerely hope 'john gregory' returns to share his research ......... and his disparaging respondent may reflect and reconsider the implications of his/her reportedly rude response.
