sadbrewer Posted 2 June , 2020 Share Posted 2 June , 2020 (edited) Looks like he was awarded The Military Medal. He is commemorated on the Brighton & Hove General Gas Company Memorial at Portslade by Sea. Courtesy of the British Newspaper Archive. Guest Posted 3 June , 2020 Share Posted 3 June , 2020 Thank you for this information. I will inform the family of the Westingtons living in Australia. I am sure they will be very proud of the man.
brianmorris547 Posted 3 June , 2020 Share Posted 3 June , 2020 (edited) There is 43356 Spr Westington, A (Abraham) named in the Times OCL 29/07/1916 under RE wounded. He is also named in the WD for 81 FC 16/11/1916. I will have a look later. Brian EDIT: In the WD of 81 FC 16/11/1916 fourteen men, including Spr Westington, are named as being awarded the MM. They all appear in the LG 29819 of November 1916. There is no further detail in the WD and nothing else in the WD of the CRE or the 19 Div Adjutant. It would seem that the awards were for general service from June 1916. The MM Medal Cards of all the men show 81 FC apart from Abraham whose Unit is shown as RETC fly 81 FC. This is consistent with his being wounded four to six weeks prior to 29/07/1916. (I have seen a number of service records which show transfer to RETC, usually Newark, in hospital at such and such a place. Of the fourteen one has a Pension Record. 43306 James Gillies was promoted to CSM on 13/09/1916 yet he is shown as a Sgt in the WD and the LG so his award was likely for action prior to 13/09/1916. He is also named in the Times OCL 02/10/1916 under RE wounded. One other man has a service record. 61926 William H Brown was wounded by shrapnel in the right leg on 04/09/1916. His Casualty Form - Active Service (AF B 103) shows 06/09/1916 RETC Newark. He did not go back to France. He is named in the Times OCL 09/10/1916 under RE wounded. I have only been through the WDs for 1916 so he may be mentioned elsewhere. Brian Edited 3 June , 2020 by brianmorris547 additional info
