robbie Posted 18 December , 2004 Share Posted 18 December , 2004 Hi all, I was in the Folkestone Old Cemetery (Kent) looking for a grave for a Pal and I came across this Belgian gravestone. Anyone know his story? I can email the picture if you PM me. Text: "ici repose Maurice Planckaert nes a mouscron (Belgique) Le 10 Juillet 1890 Victime de la castrophe du Sussex le 24 Mars 1916." What was the "catastrophe" in SUssex? A puzzle. Robbie

robbie Posted 18 December , 2004 Author Share Posted 18 December , 2004 Thanks Bob.. Robbie Found this googling The French steamer Sussex provided ferry service on the English Channel. On a crossing to Dieppe in March 1916, the ship was mistaken for a minelayer and torpedoed by a German U-boat. The Sussex did not sink and managed to limp into a French port. Fifty persons were killed in the incident; no Americans lost their lives, but several were injured. http://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h1098.html
